Thanks to last-minute efforts by both U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu, Egypt first delayed a U.N. Security Council vote on a resolution to block Israeli settlements in Palestinian territory.
Now, it has scrapped the plan entirely, according to the Washington Examiner.
As reported by Reuters, Nentayhu took to Twitter early Thursday morning pleading with the United States to veto the resolution. Hours later, Trump posted similar messages to Twitter and Facebook.
“The resolution being considered at the United Nations Security Council regarding Israel should be vetoed,” he wrote. “As the United States has long maintained, peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians will only come through direct negotiations between the parties, and not through the imposition of terms by the United Nations.”
House Speaker Paul Ryan also called on the United States to veto the resolution.
“These stunts at the U.N. serve only one purpose — to defame and delegitimize the democratic state of Israel,” he said, as noted by the Washington Examiner. “This resolution will undermine peace and mutual cooperation by pushing the parties further away from direct negotiations. The administration should veto it.”
These various statements apparently worked, as Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi subsequently postponed the vote, claiming that he needed time for consultations on the measure. According to The Times of Israel, however, he failed to provide a new time or date. Moreover, an unnamed Western diplomatic has claimed that the vote was postponed “potentially indefinitely.”
This was a huge victory for Israel, especially since the resolution specifically called for it to “immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.”
It also reportedly expressed “grave concern that continuing Israeli settlement activities are dangerously imperiling the viability of the two-state solution.”
What has actually been imperiling any chance of peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians was the Palestinians’ unrepentant obsession with wiping their Jewish brethren off the face of the map.
Regardless, kudos to President-elect Trump for doing what President Obama has failed to do these past eight years — take a bold stand on behalf of our Jewish brothers and sisters.
