The Department of State Celebrates the Groundbreaking of the New U.S. Embassy in Brasília, Brazil

In a display of the enduring bilateral friendship between the United States and Brazil, U.S. Ambassador Elizabeth Frawley Bagley joined Brazilian Secretary for Europe and North America Ambassador Maria Luisa Escorel de Moraesto to officially mark the beginning of construction of a new U.S. embassy in Brasília.

Located on the historic site of the current U.S. Embassy in Brasília’s Embassy Sector, the improved Embassy will provide a secure, innovative, sustainable, and resilient platform for our diplomats and ensure that the legacy of our bilateral relationship continues to grow.  Serving as a model of environmental stewardship, the design has achieved PROCEL certification—an energy-savings certification for all new Brazilian federal buildings—and is on target to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Silver certification. The project’s construction phase is anticipated to yield a local economic impact of $185 million and equip 1,245 direct employees with job training and educational opportunities.

Studio Gang of Chicago is the design architect with Caddell Construction Co., LLC of Montgomery, Alabama, as the construction contractor. The new embassy is scheduled for completion in 2028.
