USAGM FY24 budget responds to growing threats to information

The President today released his Fiscal Year 2024 Budget Request for the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), outlining $944.0 million in resources to fund critical international broadcasting efforts. This is an increase of $59.3 million or 6.7 percent above the FY 2023 Enacted level.

“This new budget was carefully formulated with a global, long-term vision, and in response to growing threats to the freedom of information,” said USAGM CEO Amanda Bennett. “USAGM remains committed to combatting propaganda and information manipulation, and this funding level supports investments that are critical to modernizing USAGM operations and remaining competitive in markets where we are most needed.”

Chief among the agency’s concerns are the information manipulation and media suppression tactics emanating from authoritarian governments in China, Russia, Iran, and others, who strive to undermine American values and incite political, economic, and humanitarian crises around the world. The agency will continue to build on its success telling America’s story as well as providing fact-based information and gaining trust in markets increasingly being targeted by the Chinese and Russian governments’ malign influence, including Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the broader Pacific.

The request also allows for an increase in investigative journalism and fact-checking labs, additional investment in tools to support internet freedom, and an increase in funding for the Office of Cuba Broadcasting.
