Museum Condemns Desecration of Dachau Memorial Site

WASHINGTON, DC—The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum expresses outrage and concern at the theft of the “Arbeit Macht Frei” (“Work Sets [You] Free”) sign from the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. This grotesque act is an offense to Holocaust survivors and other victims of Nazi persecution, as well as historical truth. That it happened at a time when antisemitism and Holocaust denial and distortion are on the rise in the lands where the Holocaust happened is alarming.

The Museum urges German authorities to fully investigate this crime and to provide adequate security and protection for these historic sites throughout Germany.

A living memorial to the Holocaust, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum inspires citizens and leaders worldwide to confront hatred, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity. Its far-reaching educational programs and global impact are made possible by generous donors. For more information, visit ushmm.org.
