On the Retirement of Deputy Secretary Sherman

On the Retirement of Deputy Secretary Sherman

In May, Deputy Secretary Sherman announced her impending retirement from government service. July 28 will be her last day on the job.

Wendy’s career has been extraordinary by every measure: the sheer number of hours and miles logged while serving three Presidents and five Secretaries of State; the vexing problems she’s tackled and solved; the partnerships she’s strengthened; the individuals she’s mentored, and the lives of countless Americans she’s made better – all thanks to her leadership.

It’s not just what Wendy’s done, but how she’s done it: always with principle, vigor, dedication, and compassion.

When President Biden asked me to take on this role, I knew I wanted Wendy, a longtime colleague and friend, as my partner. And I couldn’t be more grateful for the past two-plus years of partnership.

Upon Wendy’s retirement, President Biden has asked Victoria Nuland to serve as Acting Deputy Secretary until our next Deputy Secretary is confirmed. We are fortunate to have someone with her experience, skill, and commitment to the Department take on this added responsibility.

On behalf of the Department, President Biden, and our entire nation – I again thank Deputy Secretary Sherman for her remarkable service.
